FROM AGL HEATING AND PLUMBING ENGINEERS

What are the symptoms of an unhealthy heating system?

One of the easiest ways to know that you have an unhealthy system is to listen to see if it is making strange noises. If this is the case, then that is usually a good indication that something isn’t quite. Here’s what to look out for…

A ‘whistling-like’ sound

Trapped air is one of the biggest causes of a boiler making loud whistling noises. This is a very common problem and can easily be fixed by a heating engineer by simply releasing pressure and finding out what build up the air in the first place.

A ‘gurgling-like’ sound

If your boiler is making gurgling sounds, then this most likely means that you have an problem of trapped air in your system. This is actually quite common and usually occurs when there is a blockage somewhere inside of the boiler itself. It’s a good idea to keep track of how old your boiler is when it comes to tracking the kind of noises your boiler is making. This also suggests that your boiler is costing you more money than it should.

A ‘kettle-like’ sound

If your boiler is started to sound more like your kettle, then that could be a sign of an unhealthy heating system. This is usually a sign of a build up of limescale that develops over time and stops your boiler running as efficient as possible. Most of this build up happens at the bottom of your boiler so it isn’t usually visible. The reason this is an issue is that limescale blocks the flow of water and as water changes state inside the boiler, it can cause the water to expand and cause the rumbling sounds.

Speak to a local gas safe engineer if this is the case, as left unchecked this can make your boiler very inefficient and cost your more money in the long run. It can also shorten your boiler’s lifespan.

Radiator noise

One thing we would like to point out is that if your radiator is ticking then this is not necessary a bad thing. Most radiators will make a ticking sound as this is just the radiator warming up and cooling back down after use. Sometimes, the heat from the water will cause the pipes to expand slightly but this is nothing to worry about.
