Why is boiler servicing important?

A boiler service is important in order to ensure your boiler is running efficiently and safely. Many of things that can go wrong with a boiler can go unnoticed, causing you harm without you even knowing. A boiler service is a thorough check that helps avoid any faults before they occur. Most manufacturers make an annual boiler service a condition of the boiler warranty, so a boiler service could also help you save money in the long run.

Like with most things, a boiler is more likely to develop a fault the older it gets, and it becomes more important to have it regularly serviced.

Now is the perfect time of the year to have your boiler serviced because the winter rush is at an end, don’t leave it until next winter when you may struggle to get an appointment at a convenient time. Before booking, it’s vital to ensure the heating engineer is gas-safe registered, the legal requirement for anyone working on a gas appliance.

What does a boiler service include?

Most heating engineers will begin with a visual check of the boiler, the pipework and the flue, ensuring they are installed safely, both inside and outside the house, and correctly ventilated. They should also check that the boiler and the associated pipework has not begun to corrode or leak at any point. Before removing the casing, the heating engineer will also test the boiler controls to make sure they function correctly and efficiently.

After checking the external parts and working of the boiler, the heating engineer will then remove the boiler casing in order to check its components.

A thorough boiler service will include:

  • A gas pressure and flow rate check
  • A flue test to ensure the boiler is not releasing any harmful emissions
  • Cleaning and inspecting the main burners
  • Cleaning and inspecting the gas injectors
  • Checking that the electrical connections are in good condition
  • Checking that all seals are intact
  • Checking that the condensate pipe is not blocked

Once all the components have been tested and cleaned, the boiler casing will be replaced and sealed. Your heating engineer will provide you with a service report that outlines all the tests that have been carried out and any faults that have been identified. All in all a boiler service should at the very least 30 minutes but closer to an hour.
