Why boiler services keep your home safe

Boiler servicing isn’t just to make sure your boiler is running as efficiently as possible, it’s also to make sure you and your family are safe from potential dangers such as leaky pipes and carbon monoxide poisoning. Here’s a deeper look into how boiler servicing keeps your home safe…

How often should you get a boiler service

We recommend that you have your boiler serviced once per year. This will make sure that your boiler is working the way that it should be, giving you maximum benefit of heat and keeping costs down as well as keep you safe. We’ve helped hundreds of homeowners in the Warrington area with boiler installs and boiler servicing so we know that while it may seem like something that you might want to put it, we highly recommend that you don’t.

How do they keep me safe?

The best way to avoid a problem is to make sure it doesn’t happen. Most issues with boilers don’t happen overnight and it takes time for what might become a serious problem to develop. Boiler servicing keeps you safe because they allow a Gas Safe engineer to identify potential problems before they happen.

Regular boiler servicing also helps to keep you and your family safe from problems such as carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s known as ‘the silent killer’ due to the fact that it is colourless, odourless and invisible to the naked eye. It’s estimated that more than 200 people are administered to hospital due to carbon monoxide poisoning and claims the life of 50 people every year.

Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, tiredness, confusion, headaches and a noticeable shortness of breath. Long exposure to this can cause lasting damage so if you experience any of these symptoms frequently and they seem to only occur at home, then that could be an indication of carbon monoxide poisoning.

We recommend that when you do have your annual boiler servicing, that you talk to your heating engineer about installing a carbon monoxide detector. They are inexpensive and save lives. If you rent your property, speak to your landlord about this if you do not already have a detector.

It’s also important to remember that it isn’t just your home that could be affected if something goes wrong. While explosions are rare, they are a possibility due to the fact that naked flames can catch gas and ignite if you don’t know that there is a problem.
